QR Code vs NFC Pet Tags: Which Is Better?

If you have been shopping for a smart pet tag, you have probably seen both QR code tags and NFC tags advertised. Some products offer one or the other; Taggzi offers both. But what is the actual difference, and does it matter?

How QR codes work on a pet tag

A QR code is a printed square pattern that a smartphone camera can read. When a finder opens their camera app and points it at the QR code, the phone detects it and offers to open a web address — your pet’s profile page.

Pros: Works on virtually every smartphone made in the last decade. No special settings required. Also readable by tablets and some cameras.

Cons: The tag needs to be positioned so the code is clearly visible and not obscured by fur. The finder needs to open their camera app first. Codes can wear or fade if the tag is not well made.

How NFC works on a pet tag

An NFC chip is embedded inside the tag. When a finder holds their phone near the tag, the phone detects the chip and automatically opens the linked web address — no camera required.

Pros: Completely instant — tap and the page opens. Works through fur and at any angle. No searching for the code. The chip is sealed inside the tag and cannot wear down.

Cons: Requires a phone with NFC support (all iPhones since 7, all Android flagships since around 2015).

Which is more reliable in practice?

In an ideal scenario, NFC is faster and easier for the finder. But in practice, some older phones do not support NFC, and some users are not familiar with the tap gesture.

A QR code is universally understood — most people have scanned one. But it requires the code to be unobstructed and the finder to know to point their camera at it.

Why having both is the right answer

Taggzi includes both NFC and QR on every tag for exactly this reason. The NFC handles the fastest possible scan for compatible phones. The QR code is a reliable fallback for anyone else. Both open the same pet profile page, so the finder always reaches the owner regardless of which method they use.

What about plain engraved tags?

Engraved tags show a phone number directly, which seems simple — but they have real drawbacks. Numbers get outdated, the text wears down, and a single tag can only hold a small amount of information. A digital tag can show your name, multiple numbers, a photo of your pet, medical information, and more — and you can update all of it instantly without buying a new tag.

Pro subscribers on Taggzi also get a Verified Owner badge β€” a trust signal shown in the app when collecting a found pet, so finders can hand over with confidence.
