How NFC Pet Tags Work: A Simple Guide for Pet Owners

You may have heard about NFC pet tags and wondered what they actually are. The technology sounds complicated, but using one is as simple as tapping your phone against a card. Here is everything you need to know.

What is NFC?

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It is the same technology used in contactless bank cards and Apple Pay. Your smartphone almost certainly supports it — most phones have done since around 2015.

An NFC pet tag contains a tiny chip embedded in the tag itself that transmits a small amount of data when a phone is held close to it. That data is a web address — the address of your pet’s profile page.

What happens when someone taps the tag?

When a finder holds their phone near a Taggzi, their phone automatically opens a browser and loads your pet’s profile page. No app required. No searching. Just tap and go.

The profile page shows:

  • Your pet’s name and photo
  • Your contact details (you control exactly what is shown)
  • A button to call or message you directly
  • An “I Found This Pet” button that notifies you instantly

If your pet is marked as lost, the page switches to an emergency view with bold contact details and a map showing the last scan location.

What about QR codes?

Taggzi tags include both NFC and a QR code. The QR code works on older phones that may not support NFC, and also lets finders scan from a distance. Both methods open the same profile page.

Having both means your pet is covered regardless of what phone the finder has.

Why is this better than an engraved tag?

Engraved tags have two big problems. First, they wear down — the text becomes illegible after months of use. Second, your phone number might change, but the tag cannot be updated.

With a digital tag, your details live online and you can update them any time from your phone. New address? New number? Just log in and change it — no new tag needed.

Is it safe?

Yes. You control exactly what information is visible on the public profile. Most owners show a first name and a phone number. Your home address is never required and is never shown to finders.

The NFC chip itself is read-only by default — a finder’s phone can only read it, not write to it or change it.

Taggzi Pro subscribers also earn a Verified Owner badge β€” shown in the app when collecting a found pet. It reassures finders that they’re handing back to the legitimate registered owner.
