Smart ID tags that bring things home
A smart ID tag (often just called a smart tag) is a small tag with an NFC chip and a QR code. Anyone who finds your pet, bag or bike taps it or scans it with their phone, and a web page opens showing how to reach you. They don’t need an app, and you never have to print your address on it. Taggzi-Pet is on sale today (see smart pet tags), and four more lines are on the way.
What is a smart ID tag?
- Tap or scan. The finder taps the tag with their phone (NFC) or points the camera at the QR code.
- Your page opens. It opens in their browser. You choose what it shows.
- They contact you. They can call or message you, and with Taggzi Pro they can video call you without either of you sharing a phone number.

See the featuresWhy NFC and QR?
- NFC is the quickest: one tap, no camera, and it works in the dark.
- QR works on any phone with a camera, including older phones without NFC.
- Two ways in: if one is hard to use (a thick phone case, a scratched code), the other still works.

Privacy by design
Nothing personal is stored on the tag itself: it holds a web link. You decide what a finder sees on your page, and you can change it at any time. Finders can send you a private message without seeing your number, and Taggzi Pro adds private voice and video calls with no phone numbers shared.
What a smart ID tag can’t do
- It isn’t GPS. It can’t show where something is unless someone finds it and scans it. With Taggzi Pro you get a scan alert with an approximate location.
- It doesn’t stop theft. It marks the item as yours and helps an honest finder return it.
- It needs a finder. Someone has to find the item and scan the tag.
So use it alongside the things that do those jobs: a microchip and the engraved tag the law requires on a dog’s collar in public, an Apple AirTag or GPS tracker if you want location, and BikeRegister for bikes.

Questions
Do smart ID tags need an app?
Not for the person who finds it. Tapping or scanning opens a normal web page in their phone’s browser. You manage your tags on the Taggzi website or in the Taggzi app.
Do they need charging?
No. There’s no battery. The NFC chip is powered by the phone that taps it, and the QR code is printed.
Will it work with an iPhone?
Yes. Any phone with a camera can scan the QR code. iPhone XS and newer read the NFC chip with a tap, and so do most Android phones with NFC switched on.
Are smart ID tags trackers?
No. A Taggzi tag has no GPS and no battery, so it can’t show where something is. You hear about it when someone scans it. It works well alongside a tracker such as an Apple AirTag.
What if I change my phone number?
Update your details online. The change shows straight away, and the tag itself never needs replacing.
