Dog ID Tag Law UK: What Must Be on Your Dog’s Tag

Every dog owner in the UK needs to know one piece of legislation: the Control of Dogs Order 1992. Under this law, any dog in a public place must wear a collar with a tag showing the owner’s name and address. No tag means a fine of up to £5,000.

What the law actually requires

The tag must display:

  • The owner’s name
  • The owner’s address (including postcode)

That’s it. Your dog’s name is not legally required — though it’s useful for anyone trying to call them back. A phone number is not required by law but is strongly recommended.

The law applies to all dogs in public places, including parks, streets, and car parks. Dogs in their own garden are exempt, but the moment they step onto a public footpath, the tag must be on their collar.

What counts as a valid tag

Any durable tag that displays the required information counts — engraved metal, plastic, or a smart QR/NFC tag. The key word is durable: a laminated paper label tucked into a collar ring almost certainly wouldn’t satisfy the spirit of the law.

Smart tags that display owner information when scanned by a phone satisfy the requirement, provided the name and address are accessible to anyone who finds the dog — not locked behind a login screen.

Microchipping is also required — but it’s not the same thing

Since 2016, all dogs in England, Scotland, and Wales must be microchipped by the age of 8 weeks. Microchipping and ID tags are two separate legal requirements — you need both.

A microchip can only be read by a vet or rescue centre with a scanner. It cannot help a member of the public who finds your dog on a Saturday afternoon. That’s exactly where an ID tag — especially a smart one — fills the gap.

What a smart NFC tag adds beyond the legal minimum

An engraved tag gives a finder a name and address. A smart NFC + QR tag gives them everything they need to reunite your dog with you immediately:

  • Tap or scan → your pet’s profile page opens instantly in the browser
  • One-tap call or message to the owner
  • Photo of the dog, so there’s no doubt it’s the right pet
  • Lost mode: if your dog goes missing, the profile switches to an emergency page the moment you mark them lost

With an engraved tag, a finder has to call a number and hope you answer. With a smart tag, they have everything they need without making a single call — including a way to leave you a message if you don’t pick up.

Key takeaways

  • UK law requires a name and address tag on all dogs in public places
  • The fine for non-compliance is up to £5,000
  • Microchipping is a separate legal requirement — both are needed
  • Smart NFC + QR tags meet the legal requirement and significantly improve your chances of a quick reunion
