How Taggzi works: from lost to home in minutes

Taggzi is a pet ID tag with an NFC chip and a QR code. Anyone who finds your pet taps the tag or scans the code with their phone, and your pet’s profile opens in their browser with a way to contact you. No app for the finder, no battery and nothing to charge.

From Steve: The moment I'm proudest of so far was the first time a stranger scanned a Taggzi tag and it just worked: no app, no account, straight through to the owner.

When a pet goes missing, every minute counts. Taggzi makes it as easy as possible for whoever finds them to get them home. Here’s how it works, step by step.

1. Tag it

Pop a Taggzi tag on your pet’s collar. It’s a small, bright orange metal tag, resin-coated and waterproof, and it weighs about 3 g, so it suits cats too. Inside is a passive NFC chip; on the back is a QR code. Neither needs a battery.

Add your pet’s profile in a couple of minutes: photo, name, and how you’d like to be contacted. When your tag arrives, you link it to your pet yourself by scanning or tapping it, or in the Taggzi app. Tags aren’t linked before they’re posted, so the tag is only ever connected to the pet you choose.

2. Someone finds them

Anyone who finds your pet taps the tag with their phone (most phones read the NFC chip from a couple of centimetres) or scans the QR code on the back. The tag is printed with “Tap me” and “Scan me”, so the finder knows what to do even if they’ve never used one before. No app, no account. Your pet’s profile opens straight away in their browser.

If their phone doesn’t have NFC, or it’s switched off, the QR code works with the normal camera app. Both open the same page. See how NFC pet tags work for which phones read a tap.

3. They can reach you

If you’ve switched on Lost Mode, a big “Lost pet” banner tells them straight away. They can call you if you’ve chosen to show your number, send you a private message, or (with Pro) start a private voice or video call, without your phone number being shown.

They can also tap “I Found This Pet”. That sends you a report by email and in the Taggzi app, and the finder can choose to share their location with it, so you know where to go.

4. You’re alerted

Messages and “I Found This Pet” reports reach you on every plan. With Taggzi Pro, you also get an alert the moment the tag is scanned, with the approximate area, so you know someone has found them, even before they get in touch. Pro also keeps a map of where the tag has been scanned.

5. Home

That’s it. You arrange to collect your pet, or the finder brings them back. With Pro, your Verified Owner badge in the app helps the finder know they’re handing your pet to the right person.

What happens when I switch on Lost Mode?

Your pet’s profile turns into a missing-pet page. One tap adds the lost banner, makes a printable poster with a QR code, and alerts Taggzi community members nearby who have signed up for local lost-pet alerts. If you’ve added an emergency contact, such as a partner or neighbour, their details are shown while Lost Mode is on. All of this is on the free plan.

When your pet is home, switch Lost Mode off and the profile goes back to normal. Our guides on what to do if your dog is lost and how to find a lost cat cover the other steps to take.

Are your details kept private?

You decide exactly what a finder sees. Your home address is optional, and a finder can message you without seeing your phone number. You can update your number or address any time, and every tag shows the new details straight away. There’s nothing to re-engrave.

The tag itself only carries a link. Your pet’s details live in your Taggzi account, not on the chip, and a finder’s phone can read the tag but can’t change anything.

What’s in Free and what’s in Pro?

The free plan covers one pet and gives finders everything they need: your pet’s profile, private messages, “I Found This Pet” reports, Lost Mode with a poster, and community alerts.

Taggzi Pro is £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year. It adds:

  • up to 5 pets on one account
  • private voice and video calls with finders, with no phone numbers shared
  • instant scan alerts with approximate location, and a scan map
  • the Pet Passport for vaccinations, medication and vet details
  • the Verified Owner badge and card
  • one tag included (you pay £2.99 delivery)

You can cancel Pro any time and drop back to Free; the tag keeps working. See all plans for the full list.

Is Taggzi a GPS tracker?

No. Taggzi doesn’t track your pet’s location. It works when someone has your pet in front of them and taps or scans the tag. If you want live tracking as well, use a GPS collar alongside it — we compare the two in Taggzi vs GPS pet trackers.

Do I still need an engraved tag for my dog?

Yes. Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, a dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it or on an attached tag. Taggzi doesn’t replace that; it sits alongside it. Your dog also needs a microchip. See our guide to dog ID tag law in the UK.
