Pet ID tags that keep your phone number private (no app needed)

🕒 4 min read By

Short answer: Yes, they exist. With Taggzi, a finder taps or scans your pet’s tag, your pet’s page opens in their phone browser with no app or sign-up, and they can message you without seeing your number. On Taggzi Pro they can also start a private voice or video call from the same page.

From Steve: For me this is about safety. Nobody who picks up my dog Charlie should get my phone number just by reading his collar.

Why keep your number off the tag?

A number engraved on a tag can be read by anyone who gets close to your pet, for as long as the tag is worn, and you can’t take it back. Plenty of owners are happy with that. Others would rather a finder could reach them without their personal number being on show, and without having to change tags every time they change phones.

A smart tag splits the two jobs: the tag carries a link, and your details sit on a page you control. You decide what a finder sees, and you can change it whenever you like.

What does a finder see?

  1. They tap the tag or scan the QR code with any iPhone or Android.
  2. Your pet’s page opens in the browser: name, photo, and a LOST banner if Lost Mode is on.
  3. They message you, or call you if you’ve chosen to show a number.
  4. On Pro, they press “Video Call the Owner” and you answer from the link in your call alert.

You control what is shown, including whether your phone number appears at all. Your home address only appears if you add it to the profile. For the full journey, see what happens when a stranger finds your pet.

How do private messages work?

On every plan, including Free, a finder can send you a message from your pet’s page without seeing your number. If you don’t pick up a call, they can still leave a message, so a finder isn’t left waiting with nothing to do. They can also share where they are, so you know where to go.

How private are the video calls?

  • Calls go through Taggzi, so neither side sees the other’s number.
  • Calls aren’t recorded. A call log (time, length and a rough location if shared) is kept for 12 months.
  • Calls ring for up to 2 minutes, last up to 5 minutes, are rate-limited, and you can block a caller and unblock them later.
  • Cameras are optional on both sides, so it can be a voice call.
  • Taggzi ships to the UK, Isle of Man, Ireland and Canada.

What happens when your pet goes missing?

Switch on Lost Mode and your pet’s page becomes a missing-pet page: anyone who taps or scans the tag sees a LOST banner straight away, and Taggzi alerts members nearby. On the Free plan you can also print a lost-pet poster from the same page. Your number still stays hidden unless you’ve chosen to show it, so a poster or a shared post doesn’t put your personal details in front of everyone who sees it.

On Taggzi Pro you get an instant alert, by email and push, every time the tag is scanned, with an approximate location. That means you know the moment someone has found your pet, even before they get in touch.

Can someone else get the alerts?

Yes, on Pro. Going away? Give your dog walker or sitter carer access and they get the scan alerts too, without you handing out anyone’s phone number. When you’re back, you can take that access away again.

Does a private tag still meet the law for dogs?

Not on its own. In England, Scotland and Wales a dog in a public place must wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it, so keep an engraved tag or your details on the collar as well. Your phone number doesn’t have to be engraved: the law asks for a name and address. Read are QR code pet tags legal in the UK?

What does it cost?

The Free plan covers one pet. Pro is £2.99 a month or £24.99 a year and includes a tag (delivery extra), up to 5 pets, scan alerts, a scan map and the Pet Passport. See Taggzi pricing, or order a tag for £2.99 plus delivery.
