Smart Pet ID Tags Compared: What to Look For
Smart pet ID tags have become popular in the UK, and it’s easy to see why. Instead of a few engraved lines, a finder taps or scans the tag and sees a full profile for your pet.
But “smart tag” can mean very different things. Some are little more than a QR code that opens a web page with your phone number on it. Others give you private messaging, alerts and lost-pet tools.
Rather than pick apart other brands, this guide walks through the questions worth asking about any smart tag, and shows how Taggzi answers each one. Then you can compare like for like.
1. Is your phone number shown to everyone who scans?
This is the big one. A tag that shows your number to anyone who scans it is convenient, but it also hands your number to strangers.
Ask: can I choose what a finder sees? Can they contact me without seeing my number?
Taggzi: you choose what the finder sees. They can message you privately, and neither of you sees the other’s number unless you choose to show yours.
2. Can the finder actually talk to you?
A message is good. Sometimes a quick call is better, especially if your pet is hurt, nervous or about to wander off again.
Ask: can a finder call me from the tag, and does that expose either of our numbers?
Taggzi: with Taggzi Pro, finders can make a private voice or video call to you straight from the tag. Calls are never recorded.
3. Will you know when the tag is scanned?
If your pet has wandered off, the moment someone scans the tag is the moment you want to know about.
Ask: do I get an alert when the tag is scanned? Does it tell me roughly where?
Taggzi: Taggzi Pro sends you an instant scan alert with an approximate location.
4. What happens when your pet is actually missing?
A profile page is helpful. A proper plan for when your pet is lost is better.
Ask: is there a “lost” setting? Does it help me spread the word?
Taggzi (all free):
- Lost Mode in one tap: anyone who scans the tag sees straight away that your pet is missing
- a printable poster
- people nearby who’ve signed up for free community lost-pet alerts are told
- “I’ve seen this pet” sighting reports, so people can tell you where they spotted your pet even if they couldn’t catch them
- a “nervous – please don’t approach” option for pets who might bolt if someone tries to grab them
5. Does it work with NFC and QR?
Most modern phones can read NFC with a tap, and almost every phone camera can scan a QR code. Having both gives the finder two ways in.
Ask: is there a chip, a code, or both?
Taggzi: both. Every tag has an NFC chip and a printed QR code. NFC reads from a couple of centimetres away, so the finder just taps.
6. Does the finder need an app?
If a finder has to download an app or create an account, many won’t bother.
Ask: what does the finder need to do?
Taggzi: nothing but tap or scan. The pet’s profile opens in their phone’s browser. No app, no account.
7. Will it survive a muddy, wet dog?
Ask: what’s it made of, and is it waterproof?
Taggzi: a small, bright orange metal tag, about 3 g, resin-coated on both sides and waterproof. There’s no battery, so nothing to charge or replace.
8. What does it really cost?
Pricing models vary. Look at the full picture: the tag, delivery, and whether any features stop working if you don’t pay a subscription.
Ask: what’s free, what’s paid, and what happens if I stop paying?
Taggzi:
- Tag: £2.99 + £2.99 UK delivery
- Free: pet profile, Lost Mode, posters, community alerts, private messages and sighting reports. No subscription needed
- Taggzi Pro (optional): £2.99/month or £24.99/year. Adds private voice and video calls from finders, instant scan alerts with an approximate location, up to five pets, and your first tag free (you pay £2.99 delivery)
9. Who looks after your data?
Your pet’s profile holds your details. It’s worth knowing where they live.
Ask: where is the company based, and where is my data stored?
Taggzi: UK-based, registered with the ICO (ZC262224), with data hosted in the UK.

Don’t forget the basics
A smart tag of any kind works alongside your pet’s other ID, not instead of it.
In the UK, the Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires dogs in a public place to wear a collar with the owner’s name and address on it, or on an attached tag. Keep your engraved tag, keep your microchip details up to date, and add Taggzi on top. We explain more in Taggzi vs engraved tags.
And if you’re weighing up trackers too, a smart ID tag isn’t a GPS tracker. See Taggzi vs AirTag for how ID tags and location trackers differ.
Common questions
What’s the difference between a QR pet tag and an NFC pet tag?
A QR tag has a printed code the finder scans with their phone camera. An NFC tag has a tiny chip the finder taps with their phone. Taggzi has both, so the finder can use whichever their phone supports.
Will a finder see my phone number?
Not unless you choose to show it. Finders can message you privately through your pet’s Taggzi profile, and on Pro they can call you by voice or video from the tag, without either of you seeing the other’s number.
Do I need a subscription for a smart pet tag?
It depends on the tag. With Taggzi, no: the profile, Lost Mode, posters, community alerts, private messages and sighting reports are free. Taggzi Pro is optional at £2.99/month or £24.99/year.
Does the person who finds my pet need an app?
Not with Taggzi. They tap or scan the tag and your pet’s profile opens in their browser. No app or account needed.
Is a smart tag enough on its own for my dog?
No. UK law requires dogs in public to wear a tag with the owner’s name and address. Use Taggzi alongside your engraved tag and microchip.
Is Taggzi a GPS tracker?
No. Taggzi helps whoever finds your pet reach you. It doesn’t show your pet’s live location.
